Watch Your Cover

Safe sex has been the message in the media from the “If you don’t talk to your kids about sex I will,” commercials to the Seinfeld episode with Elaine determining if men are “sponge worthy”. While there are numerous methods of contraception available condoms are sometimes seen as the all-around favorite.  From the antique Three Merry Widows reusable condoms (before the medical field realized that was unhealthy) to the flavored Durex available at most novelty shops this method of birth control is widely accepted.
However, some condoms may be safer than others. During a conversation with Dr. Betty Mooney, Clinical Sexologist who worked with the Kinsey Institute in Bloomington, I was surprised to hear that some condoms can cause problems. Specifically the condoms that are fluorescent or black in color. Mooney explained that the chemicals used to dye the condoms black, or make them glow can actually flake off during sex. These flakes can increase the risk of infection.
In the case of the Glow-in-the-Dark condoms they may be cute and fun during foreplay but, it is much safer to change condoms before E.T. is allowed to phone home.

I really enjoyed this post. It's important to be able to discern safe condoms from not-so-safe condoms. It really does matter. It's unfortunate that this kind of information isn't more widely known.

Condoms are very important tools used to stay safe during sexual activity and the ability to discuss which kind of condoms are best is also important. There are plenty of other things like lubricants that can be irritating to both men and women, but especially women. I think becuase society is still so hush hush about sex a lot of this information is being neglected. Don't get me wrong, I think we, as a society, are doing better with this subject, but not as well as we could.

I hope that one day consumers will have more information about the products that are often sold to them in the late hours of the night, by companies whose only interest is making money. I hope that all sexually active people seek advise about what is safe to use and best for their body so that they can better maintain thier own sexual experiences.

I love that this post involves education and entertainment. Safe sex has been marketed in the media for years, but with youngsters and adults alike, has yet to be taken into the level of sincerity that it needs to be. Thank you for keeping my focus, rather than stating the same old birds and the bees post that most make!
